Genevive is a powerful vampire and a sorcerer of no small means, however she is not fully versed in all things necromantic and to raise an army of the undying to restore the cattle to their proper place under vampire rule, she needs to find someone who is.

For a great many years she has been seeking the resting place of Heinrich Kemmler, who though defeated at the battle of Frugelhofen in the Black Mountains, his body was never found.

Genevive believes it to have been carried away and hidden in the Barrow Hills of The Auld Ryding by those loyal to him who believe that one day he shall rise again.

It is here then that we begin our story, one chilly morning where even the perpetually overcast sky is greyer and more threatening than normal.

Ballard Weller, the marshal of The Auld Ryding is indulging himself in his favourite pastime of hawking, Grimes his Master of Animals accompanies him along with 4 of his mounted militia.

“Come Grimes don’t dally, tis a fine morn and most certainly I am not to be held up simply as you can not handle your wine as well as I”.

“Must I sound the horn though my Lord?”

Ballard Weller, the marshal of The Auld Ryding, a stern glance to Grimes, making it very clear that this is not up for debate, and so with some reluctance, Grimes blasts on the horn.
It is nothing short of a miracle that the effort does not make him vomit, nor the resulting sound split his very tender head.

“Excellent Grimes, Onward!!!”

As they gallop off, Grimes feeling the worst he has felt in many a morn comes to the mistaken conclusion that the day could not possibly get any worse.

From within the depths of the barrow mounds, the sound of a hunting horn cuts through the chill morning mist.

The wretched abhumans that feast on sweet pork pause for a moment from their searching and look to their Vampire mistress for guidance.

“Keep searching, I never said to stop” Geneive orders and after a heartbeat of consideration for her simple minded thralls, “there is nothing to fear”.

Reassured the ghouls carry on sniffing and clawing at the burial mounds, trying to locate one particular tomb.

Geneive however is not so sure, who could be out at such a time, on such a dismal day, and be this near to the barrows the simple locals fear to be haunted.

That was the first game in the campaign of Warm Ale and Mud.

The undead had to roll 2d6, needing a 10+ after spending an entire turn searching a barrow mound to see if they located the one containing Heinrich Kemmler.

The undead were alerted to the approaching ‘cattle’ thanks to the deafening and some may say, sickening horn call from Grimes.
This caused them to speed up the search which allowed a test by the hunting party each turn to see if they became aware of the undead’s movements.
If they had travelled the length of the road without passing the test, there would have been no fight!

Once alerted to there being something happening amongst the barrows, the hunting party went to investigate.

They needed to pass a fear test in order to attack, which as we saw they passed admirably.

Grimes however rolled terribly and failed to kill the ghoul he charged; must have been his hangover.

However it did not take long to kill the ghouls, they were no match for mounted men at arms.
But it did slow them down enough to enable Genevive to escort the Lichemaster away to safety, the hunting party being unable to pursue them on horseback into the thick forest.

So they returned to Averridge to raise the alarm.

Meanwhile, Genevive triumphant in her goal to free the mighty Lichemaster sets about the next part of her diabolical scheme to bring Stirland under undying rule…

A nice campaign and i like the photos, they make it feel like we're still talking wargaming here :-)

Any chance of a slightly larger font?

I look forward to the next episode :-)
